Anyone But Me

A few days ago I read about a new web series and I didn’t really give it a second thought. Then yesterday I went back and watched the first episode. Now, I am waiting on the edge of my seat for the second one to come out tomorrow.

It’s called Anyone But Me and it follows the life of a teenage girl in New York living post 9/11. Her dad was a firefighter and he has breathing problems and they now need to move out of the city, leaving her life and her girlfriend behind. She now begins the process of coming out again and again in her new life.

Here is episode one:

New episodes can be seen on www.strike.tv and www.afterellen.com every Tuesday.

Go to AfterEllen to post in the forum and find out where there is one in your city. All you TORONTONIANS better get out there and show your support. We are meeting at 360 University Avenue at 1:30 pm. Please let them know that we will not stand by while they take away civil rights!

Consider This My Marriage Proposal

Last night I was watching Charlie Bartlett with my friends and one of them said that they were going to marry the actor, Anton Yelchin. She went on to say that if I was going to be invited, I had to wear a bikini, because I would not be caught dead in a bikini. My response was that she would not be invited to my future wedding if she were to do that to me. What did my friends say?

You’re going to get married?”

I wonder why they assumed that I would never marry. That seemed rather odd to me. Long story short, it got me thinking about which celebrity I would marry. I came to the conclusion that despite my large obsession with actress and AfterEllen vlogger (only for one more week!) Jill Bennett, she would not be my choice. No, Jill would be a very close second to Tina Fey.

Why Tina Fey? Did you see Mean Girls or Baby Mama? Did you see her on SNL? 30 Rock? If you have, my choice should be pretty self-explanatory but for those who haven’t…

Tina Fey is hilarious. And not just stupid hilarious, but smart, witty humour as well. She wrote (and not to mention starred in) Mean Girls which was an amazing script with well-rounded characters and lots of twists and turns. She writes and stars in 30 Rock, her show on NBC. A show that is so funny and doesn’t ruin it with a laugh track. She wrote and acted for Saturday Night Live for a long time. So she is definitely, really really funny. She is also incredibly smart. If you watch or read interviews with Tina you can tell just how smart she really is. She is intelligent, very down-to-earth, and knows a lot about what’s going on. Also, Tina is just so liberal. She is accepting of everyone and it shows in her writing (see: lesbian subtext in Mean Girls and 30 Rock).  I think that the LGBT community (or at least the L) needs to give her some kind of award. Her support for our community is just amazing.

And not to mention those super-hot glasses of hers.

So my celebrity spouse is my screenwriting/improv idol, who’s yours? Besides, who can resist Liz Lemon in those bi-curious shoes?

Oh blurg.

Summer Movies And A Message From WALL-E

I have seen quite a few movies so far this summer and have almost completed my list. All that’s left to go is Mamma Mia! which I am going to see sometime this week. Here are my reviews of what was good and what was bad in order of how I saw them.

1. Wanted

I thought that Wanted was a spectacular movie. The only two things you need are a high tolerance for fake blood and an ability to accept that this movie is fantasy. I thought the movie was well put together and well shot. They made the tricks look cool and the colours were bold and in my opinion very high-definition.  It was very well acted by everyone involved and Angelina’s thumb tattoo (and other tattoos)–HOT. Also, even better, AfterEllen vlogger Bridget McManus of Brunch with Bridget was in it for about fifteen seconds as the checkout clerk. That made it much better. My dad (who has very good taste) hated this movie though, but that’s because he cannot accept movies that could not possibly actually happen, like the bending of the bullets in this film.

Stars: ****1/2    4.5/5

2. WALL-E

I saw WALL-E with my three year old cousin and one of the things that surprised me the most was the way that they portrayed the humans of the future. I thought it was a really good message to send to the world now that says “think outside the box, get active, look at life and not just TV.”I thought that that was a great message to send, that we need to stop polluting the earth and becoming blobs in front of our televisions and computers. (I’m one to talk about the latter…) The people of the future all wore the same clothing and looked the same. They all traveled in these floating chairs and were too obese to move if they fell out, which did happen once. They all watched the same thing on the screen floating an inch away from their faces. The world outside of the screen was a mystery. Once it was discover the people who switched off their screens (involuntarily) were in awe. Also, one of the biggest accomplishments in the film was one someone took a step.

Overall a very very cute movie with a wonderfull message presented tastefully and without pointing any fingers.

Stars: *****   5/5

3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

This was the weirdest Indiana Jones movie that I have ever seen. And I’ve seen them all. It was not the typical Indy movie, although there was lots of the action and adventure with the classic whip and Indy hat. The only thing that was different was that it really tapped into an extra-terrestrial aspect that I would not have expected. The whole thing was based on aliens being on Earth one time and now everyone wants to find their skull. I don’t want to say what happens so that I don’t give anything away, but it was interesting. Overall I thought it was cool but didn”t have the same Indy feel that I remember from the other films.

Stars: *** 3/5

4. Get Smart

Get Smart. There is one word I have for this movie. HILARIOUS. This movie was so funny, and all the jokes were definitely not shown in the trailer like most comedies. I can’t give away too much but the performances by Steve Carrell and Anne Hathway are stellar. They are a really good comedy team and I want to see them do another movie together. This is a really great movie to see for all ages.

Stars: *****   5/5

6. Stepbrothers

I didn’t really want to see this movie. I did, but not really. It looked like one of thoses really stupid fart-for-laughs kind of movie, like Talladega Nights. And look! The same actors as Talladega Nights, the same people who made Talladega Nights! Joy. But I saw the movie anyway and I thought it was funnier than I expected.  There were a lot of good jokes, but a lot of stupid moments too. I did laugh out loud at a couple parts.

Stars: ***   3/5

So those were my summer movies, and next on the list is Mamma Mia! I am really looking forward to that, although of course it will never be as good as the stage musical. but nothing is as good as it’s prededing stage equivalent.

Also, on an ending note, THEY ARE MAKING A WICKED MOVIE!!!! They haven’t announced casting yet, but IT BETTER BE IDINA MENZEL AND KRSITIN CHENOWETH or I might die. There is an article on AfterEllen.com that tells a little more about it. Read it here.

So take these into consideration…or don’t.

Back from France

So hi there! I am back from France, back home in Canada, woot woot woot. Ok so I’m really really stressed with all this schoolwork and all, but I get to see my friends and go to dragonboating practice and speak English.

Other than that though, so much has happened with AfterEllen since I left. There’s Liz Feldman’s new vlog called This Just Out With Liz Feldman (hilarious), We’re Getting Nowhere is out of things to recap and there is a whole new layout. Cool, huh? Dinah Shore also happened while I was in France and even though I really am too young to do anything there, I REALLY WANTED TO GO!!! Did you go? I want to hear stories! Who saw Jill in the fashion show or at the AE improv?? The AfterEllen Afternoon? The Logo Lounge? 3Way? Julie Goldman’s Celesbian interviews? Suzanne Westenhoefer’s comedy show? The White Party? I need some insight into the dyke drama that definitley had to have happened to someone.  No? Next time then.

Next week is the season finale of 3Way!! A Dinah Shore episode. I am looking forward to it, of course that means we all have to wait until next season, that is if they’re planning to do one.

I need to get back to my catch-up homework now,  but I’ll try to get back with some France stories later.

 Salut!

Also watch this trailer for a hilarious movie that I saw last month:

It’s Been Awhile…Ca Va?

Ok, so I know it’s been awhile since I posted anything, why? I went to France. I mean, I’m still in France, but I don’t have a lot of free time to do things like write blog posts. I’m staying with another family for three months, meaning I’ll be back in Canada on May 5th. Not that anyone really cares, just saying.

I want to make a video for my family and friends and post it on YouTube so they can all see, but I am a bit reluctant to because that would be difficult to explain, why I’m sitting in my room talking to my camera. I don’t actually speak French, just so you know. That’s the point of this whole thing. And of course culture and experience.

On a completely different note, a WHILE ago, charlie2288 posted the best bits of Dara and Karman as well, so I’ll put them up here too. I think the ones of Jill and Bridget are better, but they also have more quotable quotes I think. Although I do love Dara’s “Everybody Poops” comment.

So there’s those… Also, a really cool video about the upcoming presidential election in the United States was made by MC Jew C and Lil’ Mitzvah so I thought I’d post that too…

I think that’s it… If I think of something else I’ll post it… I’m seeing Sweeney Todd for the 3rd time on Wednesday (in French, but still, the songs are in English). I HATE horror films and am scarred for life everytime I watch one. This is no ordinary horror film though. If you haven’t seen it, see it now. Immediately. Toute suite. Alrighty, Au revior.

Helena Bonham Carter and Some More Jill

I saw the new Tim Burton film Sweeney Todd yesterday. I thought it was amazing film and the blood and gore (which I usually don’t like) didn’t bother me much. What really caught my attention was the beautiful and talented Helena Bonham Carter playing Mrs. Lovett. I realized she was Bellatrix in the fifth Harry Potter movie and said Hey! I remember now! then I went home and my father had bought my Fight Club in which she plays Marla Singer. It was quite the Helena past couple of days and I have come to really like her.

In other news, the new online series 3Wayabout a straight woman living with her lesbian roommate and her girlfriend and her ex, launched it’s website. I am excited for this to start because Jill Bennett is in it as Roxie’s girlfriend. In the promotional pictures she looks quite cute. On the site, there are different posters for each character with quotes.  It also stars Maeve Quinlan, Cathy Shim and Maile Flanagan. It looks like it will be really funny and worth seeing. The episodes will be posted online and they will be about seven minutes long. There will also be confessionals posted by the characters.

Cashmere Mafia

So the Cashmere Mafia premiere was on January 6th. I watched it and had awkward moments with my family during the scenes with Bonnie Somerville (Caitlin). Why? This show marked the first recurring lesbian/bi character on daytime television for almost a year. This could have failed in so many ways but it didn’t, not at all. The show was a bit girlier than I thought it would be, but I’m sucking it up because I like the storylines. Obviously, my favourite it Caitlin, who  falls for a woman and realizes that shes not straight. The way that this is handled by her characters is way too rushed, but it is television so it’s forgiven. I like the way that her friends handle it. Taken aback, but completely supportive. Makes me want to come out. Even more. Anyway, I like her character and the woman she falls for. I also like the dialogue between all of the friends when they get together. They’re a lot of stuff that’s unrealistic but if it wasn’t, it wouldnt be good tv. I also think that they should have more of their work lives. Anyway, it was good enough and I’m going to continue to watch it week to week. I missed episode two because my sister forgot to tape it, but I saw the parts with Caitlin in it. Here’s a summary of Caitlin so far:

Cute, huh?

Also, Brunch With Bridget, Bridget McManus’ video blog has aired two episode so far on AfterEllen and they are absolutely hilarious. And Dara, Karman and Jill of We’re Getting Nowhere started recapping The L Word. The same insanity, with new dolls.

i don’t need a life that’s normal, that’s way too far away. but something next to normal might be ok.
